Rick and I went to the movies yesterday on another one of our weekly dates. This time I got to choose and so I decided on Mamma Mia. I know it's been described as a "chick flick" so I gave him every opportunity to pick something else...he declined so off we went.
We usually go to a movie which has been in release for several weeks so there are very few in the audience. Although we were the first into the theater, the place began to fill and, by the time the movie started, there were actually 40 people in the audience. And, "yes" it's definitely a "chick" flick. How do I know this? Because, of the 40 movie-goers, exactly 4 were men. That's right...10%...which means that 90% were women (see, I can do math).
I know the film hasn't gotten the best of reviews but, from the reaction of the audience, it was a winner to them. Women were simultaneously singing on screen and in the audience and I think everyone would have gotten up out of their seats to dance if given the chance...me included.
Was it a great movie? No. Was it a fun summertime escape...you bet!

I had read another blogging review of this and she said it wasn't worth $9 but it was good.
Since I'm cheap, I'll wait to check it out on DVD...or perhaps they might show it for free at one of the outdoor picture shows.
I'm glad you enjoyed the movie...too bad you couldn't dance. Hey maybe this will be come the next great cult hit like "Rocky Horror Picture Show" and then folks everywhere can go dance & sing to it.
I really do want to see this movie but I think I'm going to wait until mid-August when I've got some time to myself and will sneak off to a matinee to tap my toe in time and drool over Colin Firth!
Took the girls to see "The Dark Knight" today and it was quite good - better than I expected as I was rather dreading going to be honest.
We're going to go see this for out "date" next week. I'm really looking forward to it.
I haven't seen that movie yet either. I don't usually pay much attention to what the critics say.
I'm with you on the Halloween stuff! It makes me mad every time I walk in a store and they have the stuff out months ahead of time!!!!!! I went in looking for a pair of shorts and the winter stuff is in! Grrrrrrrrr...
I say three cheers for "fun summertime escape" movies!!
Entertainment is important!
P.S. I have been meaning to ask you, Joan: can you have a few "words" with Mr. Witty Wordsmith over there and get him to re-start that fun blog of his?
P.P.S. Congrats on losing five pounds this week!
