Which Way to the Y

I’m sitting here in front of my computer this morning feeling blah…and guilty. I keep looking at my Ireland trip counter realizing it is now less than two months away and I have done absolutely nothing to get myself in shape and to lose the few extra pounds I’ve managed to find recently. Okay…it’s more than just a few and, to be honest, I’ve found them over the course of several years. These were the two goals (get fit and lose weight) I set for myself when we booked this trip a few months ago.

Today would be the perfect day to start an exercise regimen. Hubby is getting ready to go off and play golf so he won’t be there egging me on…I know he means well but his role as my designated exercise “coach” (his designation, not mine) makes me nuts. Tuesdays are usually less busy at our YMCA so I could go, probably find a treadmill to use without waiting forever, and there shouldn’t be lines of folks waiting for the weight machines either. Also, now that spring break is over, the locker room shouldn’t be overrun with kids milling around.

So…with all these reasons staring me in the face, why am I not putting on my exercise clothes, packing my gym bag and getting ready to drive on over to the Y? Oh…could it be I’m just an unmotivated, middle-aged woman with no willpower? Yeah…that might be it!

I'm sure I would not take a daily walk if I didn't have someone to walk with. It's more fun with someone to talk to. When my husband is unmotivated I urge him on and he does the same for me.
Despite daily exercise, I could still lose a few pounds, but I feel great!

I hear you Joan. I really need some get up and go when it comes to exercise. I know I would feel better.

You can do it!

Just think of how GOOD you will feel after!

Come on!

-> That's me being encouraging!

I've been there. I found that renting a locker at the gym and leaving my workout clothes there helped a lot (when I had a gym). And now my eliptical trainer is a nice dust catcher in my bedroom.

and I should be getting into shape for our summer trip too...dh wants me to get a bikini for our trip. I think it is awefully nice that he thinks I look good enough for one, but I sure don't want to be wobbling all over the place.

I say start with a walk around the block...!

oops, I didn't get to finish. Three times around our neighborhood "block" is a mile...it's amazing how fast that goes when you know - ok - three times = this. It's easier for me than actually GOING somewhere to exercise.

Susie: I agree that walking with someone is fun to do. Unfortunately, Hubby is far too in shape to get any real fitness from simple walking...sigh...

Patti: That's the sad part...I know I'd feel better after a workout.

Toni: Your encouragement is certainly gentler and more appreciated than my husband's nagging.

Renee: Oh there's that bikini again. You sure are one brave lady!

Sari: I'm not too sure a walk around the block by myself is safe. I guess the treadmill is still my best option. At least I can watch TV at the YMCA while I'm plodding along.

I feel your frustration. I can't seem to get motivated either. Maybe it's genetic. Is there some way we could encourage each other? Moo, oink.

I know how you feel. The Missus is trying to get in shape for a ten mile hike. It's kind of funny the influence holidays have over our desire to get in shape. We don't want to be slim and trim for the people who know us, we want to be slim and trim for complete strangers that we probably won't ever see again.

If I may chime in here, I have been trying without success to get myself motivated to some sort of exercise for the better part of forever right now. I know all the reasons that I should do it but it seems that there are more reasons NOT TO than there are TO.

For example, I keep saying I am going to start walking the track at the local high school once the weather gets better and it seems that the weather just won't get better! And with my back issues, going walking in the cold, damp, rainy weather that is Spring in New England is just not a good idea. It seems that even Mother Nature is against me!

But I know that exercise will help with my back problems so talk about a Catch 22! If you figure out where to find some motivation, can you let me in on the secret, please? I don't have a trip to anywhere coming up but I'm really not feeling comfortable in my own skin these days.

Oh I can so relate to you!! I've also been telling myself for months...ok years...to get into shape and start exercising every day, even if it's just to go walking. Have I done so yet? NOPE! I find as we get older it gets harder and harder to get motivated. Wish we could all get together and go for walks, now wouldn't that be fun? hehe xox

One of my favorite forms of exercise is walking. I'm lucky to live in a subdivision that doesn't have much traffic.

Lynn: Moo oink back. Why is it we both seem to have inherited the couch potato gene?!?!?

Patches: I think the reason we want to get slim for perfect strangers is that we know our loved ones will love us no matter what but strangers can be so judgmental.

Linda: I wish I had some magic motivation to loan you. Chronic back problems can be nasty and you are so right when you say exercise would help. When I was going to the YMCA 4-5 times a week last year, my back problems almost disappeared...now they are back with a vengeance.

Pea: I would love to have some fellow bloggers to walk with...we'd have so much fun sharing stories in person instead of online!

Iamthebookworm: I wish I lived in an area where I felt safe to walk. Instead I have to rely on the treadmill at the YMCA and the view just isn't the same.

It's hard to get motivated but once you get in the habit it just becomes a way of life. NOW, with all of that pompous advice I must say that I still struggle with my weight even though I can lift a house! ha! I can do the exercise part but can't do the stop eating so much part. Guess it's kind of like how it's hard for some of us to chew gum and walk at the same time! heehee

Midlife mom: I'm envious that you can do at least one of the things necessary to stay in shape. I went to the YMCA 4-5 days a week when I first retired so I know I'm capable of exercise...it's just that I have fallen out of practice!
