The Sad Suitcase Saga

This will be a fairly short post (for me) because I’m off to shop for another suitcase…yes…just when I thought we had that matter settled.

Our friend picked up our travel documents yesterday and, when he got home, he and his wife read through the material. Lo and behold, the tour guidebook specifically states that each person is allowed only ONE piece of luggage along with the little soft-sided carry-on (emblazoned with the tour name) they provide. Here’s the problem...that one piece of luggage can be no larger than 30”x18”x 10”. Isn’t it nice to find out this exceedingly important detail with only 3 weeks remaining before we fly to Ireland?!?!?! Where was our travel agent when we needed her?

Anyway, I feel like a traveling Goldilocks at the moment. The big suitcase I just bought is way too big (it’s going back to the store today) and our medium sized pieces (which I was actually planning to bring) are way too deep. Our one older large sized bag is just a wee bit deeper than 10” but we’ve decided to heck with them and are planning to use it anyway. So now I’m off to buy yet another suitcase for Hubby to use.

I don’t know about you but I’m getting really tired of hearing (and writing) about suitcases…what a thoroughly boring topic for so many posts. See…I told you my life was mundane!

Oh my! You have had an awful time with the suitcase sage! I don't know about you but I get so tired of all the flying regulations now. Why they shake down my poor old 84 year old father when he is going back to Florida I'll never know and then they let some rather suspicious looking characters go right on. They always pull me over to check my purse, almost every time I fly which is quite often! Do I look like a terror*ist?!! Am I going to ambush the pilot with a Chapstick? Hummmm this is sounding like a good future post! ha! As for the insomnia my husband is right there with you. He hasn't had a full nights sleep for years. It is awful, I feel so bad for him as he is wandering around at night trying to get tired. Right now he is on Ambi*en CR and that seems to be helping a tiny bit. Now I on the other hand hit the pillow and am out like a light in 5 minutes. I guess I should be very thankful.

It's in times like these that you wish we could all be "au naturel" and not have to worry about clothes and suitcases at all!!! lol xox

Oh silly you... your life is not mundane. Suitcases happen to be very important pieces of life when it comes to travelling. Everything that you will need to survive will be enclosed in that suitcase and that's so important. Good luck Joan!

in my experience the tour group ALWAYS says the same thing as this but when you get there you will see lots of luggage. we decided the last trip to italy in october that the heck with them, we could not get our stuff down that low and we would pay the penalty, there was none and everyone had extra luggage. ask them if you can bring an extra suitcase and pay a fee, like $50, then when you get there, just say you were told you could bring it. no one ever asked us for the $50, ever...

I think the suitcase situation is getting a little nutso!

wow! That's awefully picky. Must be the tour's rules, huh? Maybe there's limited space on their bus?

I hope you find the right bag. Perhaps you could look online to find which stores carry that size.

best of luck!

Is this a charter flight or are you flying a Cessna to Eire? I would think that one suitcase means one suitcase...why the dimensional limitations? I hope taht they allow one carry-on...Well, perhaps you can send your Waterford crystal home via Fedex lest your air carrier charge you more than the value of the value of your souvenirs for carrying it on their plane...

Patti: I just love carnivals...NOT!!!

Meno: Thanks!

Midlife mom: Hmmm...you a terrorist...I think not!!! And tell your hubby I feel his sleepless pain!

Pea: If it werent so darn cool and wet in Ireland, I just might do that!!!

Michele: That's it! I'm actually a contest on "Survivor" and this episode is the "luggage challenge."

Empress bee: Thanks for sharing your experience. I think, at this point, we're all thinking "to heck with them" and will probably bring what we damn well like!

Toni: It is absolutely nutso and I'm the biggest nut!

Renee: We're thinking it's the size of the bus that's make them so picky. I've been on every local store's website and, so far, no luck but I'm still not frantic!

Ralph: Delta's checked luggage restriction in 62 linear inches but the tour's is this 30"x18"x10" which is only 58. We definitely think it has to do with the size of the luggage storage on the bus. And me holding anything Waterford...now that's scary!!! Think "crash to the floor."

Well good gosh - no wonder I never travel, well, that and I can't afford it! Sounds like this has turned into the Suitcase Saga From Hell but the redeeming factor is that you found out before you went to the airport and not while you were there!

And just to be an optimist (ME?), three weeks is better than three days!

Good luck getting this thing buttoned up (yes, veiled reference to your post on the sandals!).

Linda: Yes...I admit...three weeks is better than on travel day! Oh...and just to let you know...you're one witty woman!

Yes, but keep sight of the bigger picture -- you're going to Ireland!

heartinsanfrancisco: Believe me...in the grand scheme of things, I know how lucky I am!!! :~)
