In perusing my long list of favorite blogs, I came across one which really made me cringe. Thanks Late Bloomer Boomer for reminding me that yesterday marked the 43rd anniversary of the Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. I can still remember sitting in front of our TV in the living room being mesmerized by the Fabulous Four. I'd heard their music on the radio, I'd seen photos of them in the newspaper and magazines, but this was the first time I actually saw them perform and I was hooked. Suddenly my world was filled with the Beatles...albums, photos, magazines with articles about them, Beatles memorabilia...I had it all. Along with my baseball card collection, these things were what I treasured most. And how lucky was I when my friend's dad was able to get us free tickets to the August 1965 and 1966 history-making concerts at Shea Stadium. And how devastated was I when, a few years later, my dad made me throw out almost all my Beatles collection when we moved from New York...he just couldn't see paying the moving company "good money" to ship my extensive collection. All this is so timely because, when clearing out our storage unit recently, I came across the few items my dad did allow me to take with us to our new home...my Beatles albums. The albums are still in pristine condition and I'm sure I could probably sell them on Ebay or some other website but that's just not going to happen! These albums are a link to my past and I'm planning to hang on to them for as long as I can.

You SAW the Fab Four in concert?
I am envious.

Thanks for linking to my blog, Joan.

And hold on to those albums.

Patti: I DID in fact see the Beatles...twice! I've seen lots of other concerts in my life but, by far, these 2 were definitely the most memorable. Even some of my friends' jaded teenagers are impressed when I tell them I saw the Beatles live.

I was too young, at the time, to care one way or another that you got to go to the concert, but I vaguely remember that you were able to stay at the Waldorf Astoria overnight...that bothered me...I wanted to be able to stay at a hotel overnight too!

I love the Beatles, I still want to see Paul because he's just such a legend. Everyone ought to!

I have a lot of Beatles records as well, but I play the living heck out of them! :-)

Sari: Do you actually play the records or, like me, did you go out and buy them on CDs as well? Our very expensive turntable is packed away in a closet but someday I might like to take it out and listen to the old vinyl...with all the pops and crackles.

Lynn: You were not THAT young back then!

Reading your blog about the Beatles concert blog reminded me it was only 34 years ago that we were racing down the Ventura Freeway chasing a musical shadow. Now that was also a memorable one. Lord knows what we would have done if he pulled off the freeway and stopped. Makes me think we were probably the first celebrity car chasers and we didn't even have cameras. How dangerous it was! Boy were we young and stupid!!
